Overview of scholarly research/creative activity:
We do intensive fieldwork on the behavior, survival, and breeding success of the common loons (a diving bird) in Wisconsin and Minnesota. The work is out in nature and physically demanding, but we get great looks at the beautiful lakes and loons of the upper Midwest. We also work with the public to conserve this charismatic species.
Specific projects working on:
We identify loons as individuals from their colored leg bands in order to check their annual survival, hunt for nests, and determine if they have produced chicks. These data are fed into a population model that tells us how the species is faring in Wisconsin and Minnesota. We also have opportunities to look at territorial infection of old established breeding pairs by young adults settling on their first territories.
Number of students looking to work with:
3-4
When students are needed:
Summer 2024
What students need to work with Dr. Piper:
It is important to be outdoorsy and physically fit and to swim well. Students must also get along well with others on the team and the public.
What students would be doing:
Intensive field observation of loons on lakes using canoes; nocturnal capture and marking of loons from a small motorboat.
Time commitment for students:
The work lasts from about May 28 to August 9th and takes place in Wisconsin or Minnesota.
Additional information:
It helps to have some field experience and some experience using binoculars, but these are not firm requirements.
