Overlooked Black Women Artists/Subjects within the Western Art Canon
Working alongside Riley Herendeen, we outlined the overlooked role of black women within the Western Art Canon during the Harlem Renaissance, the Civil Rights movement, and the Black is Beautiful movements era. Using specfic dates corresponsing with art pieces and artists, Herendeen and Ashkenazi created a precise timeline that showcases the black women and subjects who are "left behind" in many art history classes. Some of the questions we explored while working on this timeline were:
- Why are black women artists left out of the Western Art Canon?
- What exactly is lost when we leave black women out of this category?
- Are black women artists known for their talent? If not, why is that?
- Why do we learn about white male artists and not black female artists?
