Codex Chapman

Moctezuma's Glyph

As seen in many images describing people in power in the Florentine Codex, a glyph appears next to them, presumably an identifying feature of that person. In this image, the glyph resembles the headpiece the subject is wearing. Based on the red and blue colors and an investigation of other images, this glyph represents the Nahua leader, Moctezuma. This is a perfect example of how pictographic language conveys meaning and gives context.
