  According to the oral tradition recorded in the Aztec Cosmology and the Florentine manuscript, corn is a sacred gift given by the gods to the Mexica. The origin story tells how the gods created human beings with corn dough, establishing an inextexcable link between the existence of crops and the Aztecs. The yellow of corn is regarded as the color of the sun and life, and the shape of corn is also used to symbolize the mother's body. Therefore, corn is regarded as a sacred food in Aztec culture, representing the continuity of land and culture. Corn played a central role in numerous Aztec rituals and ceremonies, marking the critical phases of the agricultural cycle and paying homage to the deities responsible for its growth and abundance.
  
  
  The symbolism, ritual significance, and deities associated with maize in Aztec culture were deeply ingrained into the fabric of their religious beliefs, cosmology, and daily life. Maize, or corn, was revered as a sacred crop, embodying the perpetual cycle of life, death, and renewal that sustained the Aztec civilization. From Maize, the Mexica have made other foods like tamales and tortillas that share a great amount of significance to the Nahua culture. The tamales especially served as an offering to deities in ceremony, and tortillas served as ways of casting spells and testing individuals. Maize was the staff of life for the people of Mesoamerica. The Maya believed that humans were created from maize by the creator god, and thus called themselves the "Corn People".

  Deities 

  There were three Gods that I will focus on because the Mexica offered them different types of tamales that have specific meanings and are only eaten during particular festivals. The first God that I will discuss is Xiuhteuctli, who is the God of Fire but is also known as Ixcozauhqui, which means "yellow-faced," and Cuezaltzin, which means "flame of fire." His additional name is Huehueteotl, which means "the ancient god." The description of why he is a God is different from the Spanish translation of the Nahuatl in the Florentine Codex. According to the Spanish translation, he produced fire and caused fear to them, but he also evokes love by being able to heat things, such as baths and food. In contrast, the Nahuatl considered him a God because "he burned one, he consumed one, he signed one, he scorched the fields...was he useful; for with him one was warmed, things were cooked." While both discuss how he is good and evil, how he became a God is told differently. Xiuhteuctli had a festival dedicated to him each year at the end of the eighteenth month called Izcalli. There was a ceremony to honor him as a God during this festival. The tamales come in because each dwelling would have tamales stuffed with greens, which was only offered during this time. The tamales were first laid on the fire, and then they were eaten. Reaching your hand onto the grille was forbidden in the case the flame burned someone. Tamales were also offered to Xiuhteuctli because they had to be cooked on a flame.
