But, in emerging from the horror of a battle-scarred Manila, Jessie remained focused on re-building and helping where she could. She began leading multiple charitable efforts in the country, with a particular passion for helping children. But, apart from her formal charity work, she regularly would "adopt" people she found, pouring her energy into them when they needed it. One such "adoptee" was a young Fulbright recipient straight out of college named David Bradley who came to the Philippines seeking to understand economics and poverty. He needed a place to live while he pursued his work and activities, and not only did my grandmother insist he stay at her home, she helped him truly forge a connection with many poor Filipinos that opened his eyes in a way that never left him. Later, sharing his successes, he worked with Jessie to establish the first Children's Protection Unit in the Philippines (the first of many) that would provide medical and social services care to children dealing with abuse at home and needing a safe place to go.
