Overview of scholarly research/creative activity: For the past five years, I have filmed and documented a group of teens with genetic disabilities. The final film will be completed at the end of 2020
Specific projects working on: "Queen Moorea" carries important creative significance as the first coming-of-age documentary about young adults with genetic syndromes. Moorea is a young woman with Williams syndrome. Moorea’s boyfriend Jordan is high-functioning autistic, and her best friend Arianna has arthrogryposis and ocular motor apraxia. In high school, the teens work hard to appear “normal,” with “normal problems.” Queen Moorea explores the search for love, the complexity of family dependency, and the desire to find one’s true purpose.
Number of students looking to work with: 1-2
Time commitment for students: 5-10 hours a week.
Requirements for students who work with you: Students in marketing, communications, public relations, web design, and educational outreach
When students are needed: Fall 2020, Interterm 2021
What would students be expected to do: Outreach guide for film, Website for educational outreach for Disability Studies/Education, PR for film
Additional Information: The film is almost done and needs outreach plan. I want to create a guide to accompany the film for when it screens in classrooms. The film also explores family dynamics and could be used in psychology classes. I want to also have an interactive website for 15+ audiences.
