College: Schmid College of Science and Technology
Overview of scholarly research/creative activity: The Shinnyo Fellowship is a 10-month paid fellowship funded through Chapman University, which involves working with a community placement as well as the Center for Undergraduate Excellence. Fellows are expected to implement the Shinnyo Foundation’s peacebuilding aspects, creating “infinite paths to peace,” while reflecting on personal growth. For my fellowship, I decided to explore ways to make environmental activism more intersectional on an individual and community scale.
Specific projects working on: During this fellowship, I’m involved with working on different projects. This includes:
(1) Implementing food justice initiatives to assist students in need through Chapman’s Office of Sustainability. This includes creating surveys and expanding Chapman’s food pantry.
(2) Assisting Chapman's Center for Undergraduate Excellence (CUE) with writing blogs, managing social media, and overall, promoting undergraduate research and creative activity.
(3) Aiding in planning and developing campus sustainability projects which provide support and information on how students can be involved in the environmentalism movment.
(4) Creating presentations to educate the Chapman community on environmentalism that advocates for social justice at the forefront, as well as encouraging students to apply for the Shinnyo Fellowship.
(5) Designing a final project in a creative format to reflect on 10 months of service, learning, and personal growth while talking about the importance of intersectional environmentalism.
When students are needed: Students can apply in Spring 2021 for 2021-2022.
Additional Information: The Shinnyo Fellowship is perfect for allow recent post-graduates to transition into the working world without feeling too overwhelmed, and providing a platform for fellows to explore their interests. This is a great experience for those wanting to step foot in the non-profit world as well. I highly recommend applying because you never know what will happen!
