Artist Carolee Schneemann wrote extensively about her work, studying Goddess symbols and re-presenting appropriated imagery through her performances. One such symbol was the coiled serpent, which Schneemann found was a signifier for feminine creativity and power while studying Cro Magnon symbolism. She wrote about rituals and about cats. Schneemann admired their ability to move between indoor, domestic spaces and wild outdoor spaces.
Carolee Schneemann hoped that by the year 2000, women would not only teach Studio and “Istory” courses, but also see themselves reflected in those courses. She believed in finding lost women, women as image and as image maker, and exploring sexuality, magic, and taboo unapologetically.
