Overview of scholarly research/creative activity:
Adam Borecki is a music technology specialist based in Los Angeles. He is the Director of Music Technology at Chapman, manages a live concert recording business (Recording Dot LA www.recording. LA), and creates music as a composer & guitarist. His focus is electroacoustic concert music that integrates instruments with technology.

Specific projects working on:
As an educator and musician, I’m excited by the possibilities of using MIDI grid controllers (e.g. Ableton Push, Novation Launchpad) as instruments within musical ensembles (e.g. classical chamber music, jazz, and more).

My goal is to develop a front-end web app that visualizes MIDI data in a variety of formats, including standard music notation as well as fingering charts for “note mode” on MIDI grid controllers, which would aid in bridging the gap between classical/jazz and electronic music.

This web app would be used for standard music notation, music theory, and advanced concepts in music technology (specifically: overtones in saturation plugins and the harmonic series).

A “MIDI grid controller” is a piece of hardware with an 8x8 grid of illuminated squares that connects to a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation; software for composing & producing music). As a classical guitarist, I was drawn to the potential of “note mode”. In this mode, each row of the MIDI grid controller represents a set of musical notes. The rows are tuned in forths, which is somewhat similar to the tuning of a guitar.

This year, I’m hoping to foster a collaboration with a student to develop a front-end web application. The student would create prototypes and implement features, sharing ideas and collaborating throughout the process.

This collaboration could be offered for credit as 291/491 or as MUS 493C Directed Research in Music Technology.

Number of students looking to work with:
1-2

When students are needed:
Fall 2023
Spring 2024

What students need to work with Professor Borecki:
The student should have some experience with front-end web development (HTML, JavaScript, CSS, NPM, etc.) and some rudimentary understanding of music theory.

What students would be doing:
We’d work on developing the web app together. The student would create prototypes and implement features, sharing ideas and collaborating throughout the process.

Time commitment for students:
For the Fall of 2023, the collaboration would likely be volunteer work. The time commitment would depend on the student’s availability and the feasibility of project goals.

For the Spring of 2024, the student could enroll for credit, and we’d discuss expected time commitment based on the number of credits.
