Overview of scholarly research/creative activity: My research focuses on biomechanics and bioinspired design using fishes as a model group. Specific projects include investigating the multi-functional role of armor in fishes, such as protection, performance, and hydrodynamics, locomotion in elongate fishes, and bio-inspired devices such as protective equipment and robot
Specific projects working on: This year, my students and I will build models of bio-armors using a combination of 3D printing and casting techniques and test them using a universal testing machine (Instron) and particle image velocimetry (PIV). We will also delve into the world biological filters from giant whale baleen to tiny bryozoans. This work involves working with an open source program called 3D Slicer to analyze micro-CT scans. A few ongoing projects involve the puncture mechanics of things like stingray barbs, teeth, and fish spines. We are curious how the shape of these different spines affect their resistance to damage and ability to puncture their intended targets. In general, I am interested in anything biomechanics! So if you have similar research interests or techniques you want to learn I am happy to chat and help design a project that is interesting to you!
Number of students looking to work with: 3-4
When students are needed: Fall 2023 Interterm 2024 Spring 2024 Summer 2024
What students would be doing: Model Manufacturing (3D printing, casting, laser cutting, etc.)
CT Scan Segmentation
Video Digitization
Material Testing
Programming/Stats (Matlab, Python, and/or R)
Time commitment for students: We have lab meeting once a week (~1 hour). The rest of the timing depends on the type of project you want to work on and the requirements of the program you want to participate in (if any).
