Across many industries, merchants utilized many different methods to sell their products to traders. Most sold products that were necessities for the everyday life of citizens, like food. Other merchants sold products that were used for leisure, worship, or for buyers to trade to someone else. Whether through a truthful and simple trade or an unethical and devious lie, the goal of a merchant is to sell their products.
There are many merchants that sold various agricultural products and other foodstuffs, and each practiced their trade and products in certain ways. To be specific, the exportation of cocoa by the pochteca class was one that required meticulous trading skills and upright morals. This also bleeds into the chile export as well, as cocoa and chile were incredibly important to the Nahuatl empire.
There have been many merchants and traders discussed within the codex. With this many merchants, there are a variety of items that are sold, this being food, precious stones, feathers, capes, etc. Each description mentions what these merchants do in their profession, how they manufacture, maintain, and sell these materials.
The Digital Florentine Codex discusses many types of sellers. However, each description of a seller provides the “bad” version of them. These descriptions mention the process of how they sell, including the lies they relay to their buyers, the material used within their products, and their disrespectful mannerisms.
