ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ I think this is such a great ceramic piece. There are a lot of mysteries within it, but make me think critically about issues within Asian nations like China, Korea, and Japan. The stacked beanie babies on the tiny platform make me think of problems with overpopulation and relocating civilians. I also think of the bright orange color covering up all the uniqueness within the stuffed toys as a message of conformity and control within nations like North Korea or China.

The pieces that I chose to be exhibited alongside Fukazawa's Scholar's Rock III are '-force-' by video artist Simon Liu and Jennie MaryTai Liu, 'Bitter Spicy' by Britney TOKYO, and 'video 6' by ME! All these pieces highlight issues seen within Asian culture, politics, and community. They also exhibit vibrant colors and 'cuteness' as a tool for sharing these ideas. Overall, These four pieces communicate well with each other through aesthetics and ideas. I want tio share the duality of cuteness and hardship through this exhibition. (⋈◍＞◡＜◍)。✧♡

I think this is A mega fantastic diary entry. Not only does it fit perfectly within the themes of using vibrant colors and familiar objects in unfamiliar surroundings, but speaks so well alongside the message of Scholar's Rock III about the rapid economic growth and control from the nation. An extra bonus: there is a stuffed animal toy in this film which makes me think of the beanie babies. Here is a good analysis from a letterboxd review on this piece: "The glitchy effects suggest that if a natural Hong Kong ever existed, it's being stolen"

Britney TOKYO is a former actress from Japan. She is now LA-based and specializes as a nail artist. She has done nail art for many celebrities and is known for her inventive and wildly creative designs.
I saw this at Speedy Gallery in LA and took a picture of it. I'm glad I did because I can't find any good photos online and I immediately thought of this piece when curating pieces that communicate with Scholar's Rock III. Again, cute aesthetic meets serious commentary. This piece is very fun and utilizes the classic white canvas in a unique way. The way that I think of this piece may be completely different than intended, but the great thing about art is that I can think this way and not be wrong! When I look at this, I think of idol/celebrity culture in Japan and Korea. Most idols constantly put on a show because, of course, it's their job. But the bubbly acts are often time cover up the terribly difficult time with training, exhaustion, depression, and privacy. Fans think they know all about the idols they adore, but they only know about the person they see on screen and on stage. (ෆ❛ั ु³❛ัʕ•̫͡•ིʔྀ*✲ﾟ*｡⋆⃛ೄ

This is me. I am an art student at Chapman University and I am primarily a video artist, but also like working in photography, sculpture, and all the other stuff i need to learn at school
I think this would be a nice video piece to show alongside the rest of the art mentioned. like the Britney TOKYO piece, this video uses color and found footage to comment on Asian pop culture influence as well as fandom and viewership. I think this one is less focused on political issues and more on a broader idea of cuteness as a useful tool.
The video is a self portrait using superimposed clips of several Magical Girl anime episodes. These shows are typically made for young girls to watch, but there is a depressing undertone of these shows that are rarely expressed on screen - the fate of these young characters to live as a hero for the rest of their lives. They don't get to go to school, or play sports, or go out to eat like normal girls anymore. The duality of a magical girl's life shares a similar tone to the duality of pop culture, cuteness, and the other pieces in this exhibition.
