The Departmental - Spring 2021

THE DEPARTMENTAL - SPRING 2021

This exhibition was juried by the Art Department Faculty. Two or more votes were necessary for works to be included. Our two outside jurors June Edmonds and Ron Athey juried the awards.
.

June Edmonds is an American painter and a teaching and public artist

She uses abstract painting to explore how color, repetition, movement, and balance can serve as conduits to spiritual contemplation and interpersonal connection to her African American roots. Exploring the psychological construct of skin color or tone through pattern and abstract painting has proven to be a revealing gesture and these ideas are explored in her two ongoing series: the Energy Wheel Paintings inspired by her meditation practice and her Flag Paintings, which explore the alignment of multiple identities such as race, nationality, gender, or political leanings.

She is an active and prominent contributor to the Los Angeles art scene, and is a member of both the Artist's Alliance of Southern California and the Women's Caucus for Art. Her work has been shown extensively in California at venues including the California African American Museum, Huntington Beach Art Center, Watts Towers Art Center, and the Korean Cultural Center. Public art works by the artist include a Venetian glass mosaic at the MTA Pacific Station in Long Beach and a mural project titled "Windows to Health" with LA Commons / Building Healthy Communities at the Expo Center in Exposition Park. In 2018 Edmonds was a recipient of the City of Los Angeles (COLA) artist fellowship.

.

Ron Athey is an iconic figure in the development of contemporary art and performance. In his often-bloody portrayals of life, death, crisis, and fortitude in the time of AIDS, Athey calls into question the limits of artistic practice. These limits enable him to explore key themes including gender, sexuality, SM and radical sex, queer activism, post-punk and industrial culture, tattooing and body modification, ritual, and religion.

He began performing at underground galleries with Rozz Williams in 1981, in a collaboration known as Premature Ejaculation. In 1992 he began staging what was to become a performance “torture” trilogy: Martyrs & SaintsFour Scenes in a Harsh Life, and Deliverance

Recent works include Judas CradleSelf-Obliteration, and Gifts of the Spirit: Automatic Writing, in which he explores his Pentacostal upbringing and the creation of an ecstatic experience. Also, a visual artist and journalist, he recently celebrated the release of the first publication dedicated to his life and work, Pleading in the Blood: The Art and Performance of Ron Athey.
