AH 342 Black Subjects in White Art History: Fall 2021 Compendium

Anna Coogan

My name is Anna Coogan, I am a 19 year old graphic design major from Barrington Rhode Island and I am a sophomore at Chapman University. I have loved art for as long as I can remember whether it's painting, drawing, photography or being fascinated with the visual world around me, art is my passion. As I’ve grown older, I have learned so much more about art, how it functions, why it exists and how it is everywhere around the world and means so much to so many people and cultures. Art provides an opportunity for people who don’t have a voice any other way. It’s not only important to be understood but appreciated and praised as well. Black culture and art has been altered, changed and silenced by Western culture and ideology. I am passionate about putting the spotlight on black artists and seeking justice for black culture and art that has not been given the voice it so well deserves. As an artist, this is a way I hope to seek justice for the black community through mutual passion and respect.
