Images and Imaginings of Internment: Comics and Illustrations of Camp

Comics at Camp

Each of the 10 incarceration sites operated as mini cities with about 10,000 inhabitants and about 20,000 at Poston in Arizona. Each one of these internment camps generated their own newspapers and within each of the newspapers, there were comics and illustrations about the life and conditions in the camps.
These images provide insight into the conditions of the internment camps and what life was like inside. Because photographic equipment was considered contraband and those interned were not allowed to have them, in some cases, the illustrations are the only representations of aspects of lived camp life.
We will list these images by artist
